The emu kids’ picture book begins with the emu father protecting his eggs in a nest on the ground. A while later, he is greets his first chick called Emma. Finally, all five chicks are ready to explore. Firstly, father emu shows them what to eat. Then, the artwork shows all birds taking a bath in a puddle. Time passed and the birds have grown more. They are having fun running and jumping around. Suddenly, they are spot something strange and bravely check it out. It’s a Frilled-neck lizard trying to scare off the emus with his big frill around his neck. A while later on their way home, the emus are talking about their distant cousins, the cassowaries. They are discussing their differences, but acknowledging that they too have a striped plumage while young. The emu chicks stay with their father for several months longer. Then, they venture out into the world to raise and protect their own families.
